"SMART WOMEN Use Their Resources to Escape and Prevent Domestic Violence"
Join us for the 2019-2020 SMART Women Series that will kick off with a topic that unfortunately San Antonio is all too familiar with - domestic violence!
In 2018 it was reported that 28 people died from domestic violence by our sessions provocateur, Marta Peláez, President and CEO of Family Violence Prevention Services, Inc (FVPS). Even more disheartening is the fact that Bexar County ranked number one amongst major Texas counties for the family violence homicide rate of women.
Domestic violence as defined on the FVPS website is a pattern of behavior in any relationship that is used to gain or maintain power and control over an intimate partner. It can happen to anyone of any race, age, sexual orientation, religion or gender and affects people of all socioeconomic backgrounds and education levels.
Possibly even more shocking is that nationally, 1 in 4 women will be affected by domestic violence in their lifetime; in the state of Texas, 1 in 3 women will be affected by domestic violence in their lifetime; and, Bexar County has the HIGHEST rate of reported domestic violence per capita in Texas, and one of the HIGHEST in the nation!
Marta is in the trenches every day working with adults and children that are victims of abuse. She will share her expertise on this sensitive subject, which includes:
Know the various types of abuse - it's not just physical;
How to identify abuse within our families and friends in our community;
How to assist those trying to escape or end the cycle of violence
Marta will also outline the steps that San Antonio is taking to eradicate family violence in our community.
